Instagram Now Charges for Post Links: What's Paid and What's Free

Meta One sells clickable links in Instagram posts and reels, capped each month and fixed once posted. See what is still free and what creators can do instead.

Instagram now sells clickable links in posts and reels. They come with Meta One, the paid subscription Meta announced on September 15, 2026. If you promote anything that lives off Instagram, two questions follow: is your bio link still free, and are paid post links worth it?

As of October 2026, bio links and Story link stickers are still free. Links inside posts and reels are a paid Meta One feature with a monthly cap, and you can't change them once the post is live. This guide explains what that means and what you can do about it.

What Meta One charges for

Meta's help center lists links in Instagram posts and reels as a benefit of three Meta One plans. As of October 2026 (Meta help: link limits, Meta help: plans):

Plan Starting price (US) Instagram posts with links Instagram reels with links Facebook reels with links
Essential $14.99/mo Not included Not included Not included
Advanced $49.99/mo 4 per month 4 per month 8 per month
Expert $149/mo 8 per month 8 per month 20 per month
Max $499/mo 12 per month 12 per month Unlimited

Prices are the "starting at" figures in Meta's announcement. Facebook's help center lists Expert at $149.99 and Max at $499.99, and Meta says "plans, benefits, pricing, and availability may vary by region, by app, and by account." Check the price in your own app before you subscribe.

Meta's help page on post and reel links lists these rules as of October 2026:

  • Links are permanent. "You can't edit links after you've shared your post or reel."
  • Unused links expire. The limit resets on your renewal date, and unused links don't carry over to the next month.
  • Posts and reels are counted separately. Four post links and four reel links are two separate allowances.
  • Only some accounts qualify. The feature is for eligible public Instagram accounts with a Meta One subscription. Teens can't use it.
  • Some links don't count. Links to Meta's own apps, catalogue product links (including affiliate links) and links in ads don't use up your allowance.

When you add a link, Instagram shows a Meta One label and how many links you have left.

What is still free on Instagram

As of October 2026, three kinds of links on Instagram need no subscription.

Bio links. "Without a subscription, you can add up to five links to your bio," according to Meta's link page help. Subscribers on Essential and above can turn that into a link page with up to 20 links, each with an image and a title. The basic bio link is free either way, and you can edit it whenever you like.

Story link stickers. Instagram opened the link sticker to all accounts in October 2021, except new accounts and accounts that repeatedly break its rules. Its current Stories guide says "anyone watching your story can tap the sticker to open the link."

Exempt link types. As listed above, catalogue product links, links to Meta apps and ad links sit outside the monthly cap.

Who is affected

Anyone who wants a clickable link under a post. As Nick Heer put it, "Instagram has never supported links of any kind in individual posts" (Pixel Envy, October 7, 2026). For feed posts, Meta One adds a paid option rather than taking away a free one. Heer was not impressed: "It seems utterly bananas to me that Meta is pitching links as a feature people need to pay for." Michael Tsai picked up the story on October 12 and saw a wider trend: "Requiring login, removing RSS, discouraging links. Things are not looking good for the open Web."

Facebook Pages, too. As of October 2026, Facebook's help center says Pages with the restriction can include links in up to 2 organic posts or comments per month without a subscription, and that links in comments count. It also says the limit may not apply to all Pages.

Not everyone yet. Meta's plans page says "Meta One is currently in limited testing and isn't available everywhere yet." The September 15 announcement says plans "are now available globally" and also that they "are rolling out gradually." If you don't see the option in your app, that may be why.

Who might reasonably pay. Meta One bundles more than links. If a single post can drive a launch or a sale, or you want the other plan features, a few paid links may be worth it. The rest of this guide is about making that choice with data rather than guesswork.

What a post link actually costs

To compare plans, divide the price by the Instagram links you get, as if links were the only thing you used:

  • Advanced: $49.99 for 8 Instagram links (4 posts, 4 reels), about $6.25 per link.
  • Expert: $149 for 16 Instagram links, about $9.31 per link.
  • Max: $499 for 24 Instagram links, about $20.79 per link.

This math ignores Facebook reel links and other bundle features, and it assumes you use every link before your renewal date. Treat it as a sanity check, not a verdict.

Links are fixed, which can be costly. A post stays on your profile until you delete it. If its link points to a sale that ends, a product that sells out or a page you later move, the link stays wrong because you can't edit it.

What creators can do

Put a link-in-bio page in your Instagram bio and end captions with a short pointer to it. That one link is free, never runs out and can change as often as your offers do. On ManyLinks, the Free plan includes unlimited links and blocks, so your page can hold every destination your posts mention. If you have not set this up yet, see how to add multiple links to your Instagram bio.

If you pay for post links, point them at an address you can change

Meta locks the link, so point it at an address you control. Your link-in-bio page is the simplest choice.

For a single destination, every ManyLinks link block has its own short link, shown in the block's settings. It redirects to whatever URL the block holds right now. Edit the block, and the post link follows. One caveat: if that block is password-protected, expired or not yet scheduled to appear, the short link returns "not found." After posting, test the link while signed out or from a second account.

On Pro, you can connect your own domain and give links custom slugs on it, so the address in your post is yours rather than a tool's.

Measure each post before you pay for more

The fair test is whether paid post links send more visits than your free bio link. Tag each link with UTM parameters, for example utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=spring-launch. Our UTM guide explains the naming.

On every ManyLinks plan, analytics show where your page traffic comes from over the last 30 days, and visits that arrive with an Instagram referrer are grouped under Instagram. In-app browsers don't always pass a referrer, which is another reason to tag links. Pro adds a UTM campaign report that groups views and clicks by campaign, source and medium. It only includes visits with a campaign name, so always set utm_campaign. For what to look at first, see the link in bio analytics guide.

Post links can't be fixed after the fact, but bio links can be planned. On Pro, a link block can have a start time, an end time or both. Before it starts, visitors see a "Coming soon" placeholder. After it ends, they see "No longer available" instead of a dead offer. Set a launch or sale link once, then mention "link in bio" in the caption.

Use Story link stickers for timely pushes

For anything urgent, a Story link sticker is free for every account except new ones and those that repeatedly break Instagram's rules. Add the same UTM tags so Story clicks show up separately from bio clicks.

The bottom line

As of October 2026, Instagram's free link spots are the same as before: up to five bio links and the Story link sticker. What's new is a paid option for links inside posts and reels, capped each month and fixed once posted.

For most creators, the bio link remains the main way off Instagram. If you do test Meta One, point your paid links at an address you can still edit, tag them, and compare the numbers before you upgrade to a bigger plan. If you want UTM reports, scheduled links or your own domain on ManyLinks, compare plans.
